This stunning artwork features a close-up of a vibrant yellow flower encased in a delicate, translucent layer, resembling ice or glass. The flower's petals, with their intricate details and subtle variations in shade, gracefully unfurl against a soft, blurred background, creating a captivating contrast. Tiny bubbles can be seen within the translucent layer, adding a unique texture and depth to the piece. The interplay of light and shadow accentuates the graceful curves of the flower, inviting viewers to appreciate its beauty up close. This artwork exudes a sense of freshness and vitality, while the cool background creates a serene ambiance. This captivating floral artwork would be perfect for brightening up various interior spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, or even galleries. Its vibrant colors and tranquil mood make it an excellent choice for areas meant for relaxation and contemplation, such as reading nooks or meditation spaces. It can also serve as a striking focal point in a hallway or entryway, welcoming guests with a touch of nature.
To freeze time – Vibrance and life go hand in hand with doom and death; time is the stuff that comprises our lives; it bestows value upon our existence.
It constantly destroys and recreates. Everything stays on earth merely for a moment, lives, and passes away. Plants grow, bloom, and die just like humans. The wonderful uniqueness of our transience gives beauty, lucidity, and meaning to every breath we take. I was particularly fascinated by the paradox that something hostile and deadly like ice can stop the degradation of a delicate, vibrant flower. The combination of water, light, and shadows creates an almost mystical impression that preserves the aura of a single flower. At the same time, every vein, and every detail is visible.
To preserve these fleeting moments for eternity, flowers were frozen into blocks of ice and captured with a strong backlight and zoom. Since in macro photography individual images have a very shallow depth of field, each image must be composed out of copious individual shots taken at different focus distances. Due to software that controls the camera, it was possible to shift the focus for each picture individually in a millimeter range and scan the partially transparent, three-dimensional block of ice layer by layer. These almost identical images were superimposed and put together into a single, consistently sharp combination; this technique is called "focus stacking" and describes a technique which combines photographic art with a digital image processing technology.
Experimentation and volatility challenged this project, because the compositions are dependent on luck. Interactions of the elements can't be controlled. The flowers are changing their shape and position during the freezing process, even the freezing of the water is always different and unpredictable; will the ice become cloudy? How many air bubbles will be included? Will cracks and gaps arise when melting? The heat of the spotlights forced me to hurry to prevent the ice from thawing. This is exactly what makes it exciting - dealing with living material.
