I observed and photographed the sandpipers from the snipe family one fall evening on the Danish Easter Island of Aeroe at the edge of the sea. I painted this picture in my studio in the spring of the following year. I applied the oil paint impasto with palette knives to make the graceful movement of the birds and the wind stirring up the spray tangible. I captured the play of light on the water in an impressionistic way. The painting brings energy and the power of nature into a room. The painting surface consists of a coffee sack that has been pre-glued and triple-primed and stretched on a stretcher frame. The coarse structure of the jute is ideal for impasto painting and for my expressive painting style, and my signature is on the front.
